All of his writings are either directly or indirectly about Christianity. After reading the preface to Either/Or, as soon as I began the “Diapsalmata,” the section from which I draw the following excerpts, I was struck. But I think Kierkegaard would have understood and appreciated a cultural project such as this. He adapted the Sermon on the Mount for American audiences, writing, “Blessed are the happy who have everything, because they won't need to be comforted” and “Blessed are the impeccably dressed, because they will look nice when they see God.” He responded sharply to Kierkegaard's Either/Or with a treatise titled Both/And, followed by the conciliatory Either/Or and/or Both/And. I haven't read Kierkegaard and can't vouch for this particular book, but I have found these "Very Short Introduction" books useful when getting into a new area or author. To write a book is the easiest of all things in our time, if, as is customary one takes ten older works on the same subject and out of them puts together an eleventh on the same subject. He's thus a natural opponent to Dawkins, Dennett, and Harris. Either/Or : Part 1 Kierkegaard's Writings. And the culmination of these impressions, gleaned while reading the “Diapsalmata” and upon finishing it, Either/Or as a compilation of two “found texts,” arranged and published by an unnamed editor (Preface). I feel a thinker shows genius if he or she is either able to provide you a tool which enables you to understand more of the world around you, or a question mark that primes you to question the same world and its mechanisms. (I think I've read the ones on Habermas and I took a course in Kierkegaard a few years ago and our readings were Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, Philosophical Fragments, and a few generous helpings from the Concluding Unscientific Postscript. The editor refers to the first set of writing as the writings of “A,” in light of the fact that he has no name for the author. Søren Kierkegaard was not an atheist.
